3.07 Spy Hunt (Lv 120)

Mission Synopsis: It has been found out that enemy spies had infiltrated our camp and knew of our plans to send a false advisor to the enemy. These two spies, Cai Zhong and Cai He, are now attempting to escape to tell their lord, Cao Cao, of our plan. Eliminate them to ensure our plan's success.

Legend:

Blue: Allied base

Orange: Ambush points

Red: Enemy boss

Objectives:

1. Investigate the West Road (Cai Zhong)
2. Investigate the East Road (Cai He)
3. Hunt down the spies

Walkthrough:

First of all, understand that you are to attack 2 paths, and you can either do this by splitting up your team (one team goes left, another goes right), or advance together. It is recommended to move together, unless your characters have strong attack power to clear a bunch of enemies together. The enemies here are Elite Sage (Lv 119 Staff), Elite Brute (Lv 120 Sword), Elite Ruffian (Lv 120 Sword), Elite Blowgun Soldier (Lv 121 Gun), Elite Siege Giant (Lv 121 Cannon). The bosses are Cai Zhong (Lv 130 Gun) and Cai He (Lv 130 Gun). All traps in solo are Flame Trap I, and traps in Squad are Flame Trap II and Net Trap II.

UPDATE: The mission has added 2 summon gates starting from Valkyrie's Festival of Valhalla event (one on each path) to summon troops to slow your advance. In order to clear them, I encourage you to bring your catapult with you to destroy the gate as you proceed each lane. Note that max range allows the catapult to snipe just before the cutscene (works only for left, I can't seem to get it for right). Always bring sufficient money for at least 2 catapults purchase.

The next thing to note is that whenever you come across a cutscene, be prepared to face many enemies. The ambush may be above cliffs (a group of elite siege giants), right in front of you (another group of elite siege giants), or near you (a group of elite blowgun soldiers). AOE damage spells like flameblow works best on all units except Elite Siege Giants. All ranged and magic attacks are strong against the enemies in this whole mission, so it is advisable to bring as many ranged units as possible.

Whichever path you start first (both have same ambush points and trap areas), you will first come across a small group of elite sages, brutes and blowgun soldiers at the immediate north of your start point. Thereafter, you will choose to go either left or right. For ease of reference, I will start with the left path. At this stage, you may be upgrading as you move. Just before the first ambush point labelled on the map, you will encounter a small group of elite siege giants and elite sages, as well as a cutscene to introduce the ambush party.

After clearing the ambush (you can choose to ignore those on the cliffs, but it makes it easier to pass through the path when you proceed/return if you choose to kill them), you will again come across another group of sages, ruffians and siege giants. There are some traps along the way, so be wary of them. When you have reached an area in between 2 valleys (marked as an ambush point on the map), you will come across Cai Zhong's cutscene, followed by another ambush group of elite blowgun soldiers and elite siege giants (above cliff). Take note that there is a trap right before the boss area. Once you have killed him, a bunch of enemies will appear on the same path that you took, and you have to clear them to proceed to the right path. Fortunately, there are no cliff reinforcements for this. By now, you would have completed the upgrade path and all you have to do is concentrate on advancing and killing. Proceed in the same method for the right path and you will eventually carve your way to Cai He. Killing him will end this mission in success.

ADDITIONAL TIP: If you want to run this mission fast you can do the following methods. First, go to the right path for your first boss attack. This significantly reduces mob spawned at middle compared to if you go left. Second, leave your catapult behind at base. Your catapult can attack like the arties on the cliff against the mobs you encounter on right path (doesnt work for left as buildings are blocking the way). Third, since your cata is in base (meaning no one should be attacking it), you can simply let your entire team die after killing the first boss (remember to tell your squad mates too) and respawn at base for the second boss attack. You will save a number of turns trying to traverse back the path you came :)

LOCKING BOSS: This trick is pretty simple but yet efficient for anyone who lacks firepower. Get a unit to stand behind the boss; one on his right; one on his left; and one in front of him. All must stand at a melee range, so it's better to choose units that can attack at melee range such as all melee units, instrument, gun, staff. The boss will then be unable to run, and also he can't attack because the boss cannot attack at minimum range. Only at times will he still use spells to attack. Next, if you have other units such as bow that cant fire at melee range, put them in a position where they are not directly in any direction of attack (N,NW,W,SW,S,SE,E,NE). Think of the boss as a compass and you will know what this means. From there, you can attack the boss and he can't move at all!
